Ruth is a multi-instrumentalist, and has been in bands since being a teenager growing up in Bradford. She started out on the piano and guitar, but the saxophone quickly became a firm favourite, helped by having an incredible teacher. As the daughter of two excellent teachers, Ruth is an enthusiastic educator, and has experience as band and choir leader, as well as teaching songs to children in nurseries while she was at University.
Having experienced first hand the power of a teacher who believes in instilling students with the passion for playing music, building confidence and making learning an instrument fun and engaging, Ruth is the kind of teacher who is guided by what makes her students excited and want to play, and building from there to help them develop and hone their skills.
Ruth played at the Royal Albert hall in her school band Soul’d Out at the Music for Youth Proms in 2007, and the bug for making and performing live music has never left.
She composed, directed, recorded, released and performed her debut EP with an ensemble of 12 musicians in April 2024, and her other current projects include Sheffield-Bristol based band SHRUB, improvisational music group Emergence Collective, and several other small projects. Ruth likes to have lots of different things going on at once, to keep challenging herself musically, have musical variety, and to spend more time with more excellent people being creative.
When not playing music, Ruth can be found riding her bike, cooking for friends or gobbling up a good book.
